This cowl is a great project for that odd ball of beautiful yarn in your stash.

With a simple two-round repeat that we work on and on until we almost run out of yarn, this cowl is perfect for mindless knitting while watching a movie or a TV show.

To make it more interesting, I made sure the cast-on and bind-off edges look the same and have a good amount of stretch.

How did I do it? The pattern explains every little trick I used.

FINISHED MEASUREMENTS

Circumference – 48 cm / 19”

Length – 26 cm / 10 ¼”

YARN

Any wool, wool blend, cotton, or acrylic yarn that has the equivalent of 125 m / 135 yds in 50 g / 1.7 oz. It is consistent with the DK weight that is marked by the digit “3” on the yarn label.

You will need all 125 m / 135 yds to make this cowl.

NEEDLES

Circular or double-pointed needles in size 6 mm (US size 10).

Note: I find it more comfortable to make this cowl using the magic loop technique, but you can also work with two circular needles or with five double-pointed needles.

To work with one long needle and the magic loop technique, the circular needle should be at least 80 cm / 32” long.

NOTIONS

Crochet hook in size 6 mm (US size J-10) for casting on stitches.

Wool needle for weaving in tails.

GAUGE

12 stitches x 18 brioche rounds (36 actual rounds) = 10 x 10 cm / 4 x 4” in brioche stitch, measured with the fabric relaxed.

NOTES

The cowl is worked in the round and doesn’t have any seams.

This cowl is designed to have a snug fit around the neck. If you’d like to have a looser fit, add more stitches to the number of stitches you cast on. The total number of stitches should be an even number.

Underlined techniques are available as separate tutorials. Click the underlined name of the technique to read and watch the tutorial.

When you start to knit this cowl, it will seem that the circumference is really small. This look is deceiving. Brioche stitch stretches a lot, and when you try the cowl on after you work a few rounds, you will see that it easily slips over your head and stays close to your neck.
