This is a cute version of a basic cotton tote—it uses the same all-in-one flat-knit no-finishing concept as the Fell Swoop bag, but it’s a little easier. (It’s also a completely separately-developed workup of this idea: I was not exactly working smarter here, but I wanted a rounder bag shape with a little more taper at the opening, so I kind of worked that up from scratch all over again).

What sets this design apart are the handles: they’re knit separately, and joined with a square knot. You can adjust their length every time you use the bag, if you like: make the handle shorter by placing the knot close to the bag, or longer, for a shoulder-carry, by positioning it further away. The trailing ears are very cute.

Materials:

  • 360 yards each of Valley Yarns 3/2 Cotton and Valley Yarns 8/2 Cotlin, held together
  • 1 24”+ circular needle in US6-7/4.0-4.5mm, or size needed for gauge
  • tapestry needle for weaving in ends
  • removable stitch markers—optional, but nice to have to easily keep track of row counts

Gauge:
Gauge at the handle is 9 sts and 14 rows over 2”/5cm of garter stitch, worked flat and gently blocked. Please be sure to check your gauge.

Measurements:
One size! These are flat measurements after blocking:
Handles: about 12”/30cm long each
Width: 12”/30cm
Height/Depth: 9.5”/24cm

Notes:
This does use yarns held together, but frankly I think holding yarn together is not a good time (I am bad at it). I like the results, but my real motivation for the doubled yarns was just to approximate a worsted/dk weight cotton, since that might be a little easier to find. Feel free to substitute yarns; this bag is designed for that!
