This cute yarmulke works up quickly and simply, knit flat and shaped with German Short Rows. Requiring only a few yards of worsted weight wool, these kippot are a practical way to use scraps. Knit a few to share as gifts, for family celebrations, or to keep for yourself.

Yarn: Malabrigo Rios (100% wool, 100g, 210 yards), in colorway Piedras #862. Any worsted weight yarn may be substituted.

The knit sample required about 13g/28 yds.

Needles: US 6 (4 mm).

Gauge: 22 stitches = 4” garter stitch (about 5.5 stitches/inch). Exact gauge is not essential.

Dimensions: 5.5” (14 cm) diameter.

Suggestions for modification:
• Instead of provisional cast-on, work a three-needle bind off with seam on inside.
• For a larger kippah, CO 17 sts and knit 11
sets of short rows (24 rows per wedge).
• Substitute a different short row method.
• Experiment with colors and stripes!

First image (on head) is shown with 17 stitch cast-on (6” diameter). Second image (cropped picture of kippah on table) is with 15 stitches. I prefer the smaller version, but they are quite similar. Feel free to experiment with stitch count and needle size.
