This cosy cowl acts as the perfect winter wind blocker. It is double-sided with a vertical texture on one side and a horizontal texture on the other. It can be rolled and folded to be worn in a variety of looks. This pattern is designed for Scheepjes Stone Washed XL/River Washed XL yarn. You can also use a Scheepjes Stone Washed XL/River Washed XL colour pack, and is partnered with my Lemonade Scarf pattern to use all the yarn in the pack. (https://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/lemonade-scarf-2)

Level: This pattern is aimed at intermediate crocheters and uses chain, half treble crochet (US half double), front post stitches and slip stitches, though a perseverant beginner could use it to improve their skills. Once you have mastered the first few rows, the rest of pattern is a simple repeat. Photo tutorials are included for all non-standard stitches.

You will need:

  • Minimum 4 x 50g balls of Scheepjes Stone Washed XL/River Washed XL, you will need more balls if you want more than 4 colours in your cowl. If using 15g mini balls from the colour pack, you will need 14 balls. Each ball makes 1 x 2-row stripe.
  • 6 mm crochet hook
  • Yarn needle
  • Scissors

The finished cowl is ~62 cm in circumference and 22 cm high.

Colour substitutions:
The pattern can also be worked in a single colour of Scheepjes Stone Washed XL or River Washed XL, or any number of alternating blocks of colour. You will need 4 x 50 g balls at a minimum (e.g. 4 balls of 1 colour or 3 balls of base colour and 1 colour for contrasting stripes).

Other yarns: The recommended Scheepjes yarn is quite a bulky aran, and handles a 6 mm hook well. If using another aran weight yarn, you may find a 6mm hook creates a fabric that is too loose. In that case, drop down a hook size (either to 5.5 mm or 5 mm) but be aware the cowl will be a little tighter on your neck and a little shorter - though you can, of course, add as many more pattern blocks as you like to increase the height or circumference. You will need extra yarn to do this.

You can also use a chunky/bulky weight yarn.

Details on how to change the size of the cowl are included in the pattern.
