This lovely half pi shawl was inspired by the beautifully colorful and intricate Rangoli designs of India. I made this Rangoli shawl to celebrate Diwali this year and thought the mosaic technique in knitting is a perfect way to capture some of these shapes and colors. You can also make this into a colorful welcome mat or rug for your home!

Rangoli is an art form from India in which patterns are created on the floor in living rooms or courtyards using materials such as colored rice, dry flour, colored sand or flower petals. I thought why not also use super colorful yarn! Rangoli designs can be simple geometric shapes, deity shapes, shapes from nature; and can be very intricate or simple.

These designs are usually made during Diwali (Oct 19th, 2017) but can also be done during other Indian festivals and occasions. The purpose of making a Rangoli is to bring luck and prosperity to your home, particularly during a festival season. However, you can make a Rangoli at any time of year and this shawl is a perfect way to wrap yourself around vibrant colors and shapes during any season!

I hope you enjoy this pattern as much as I enjoyed designing it for you!
