This is a pattern for a short scarf that I designed for my husband. He didn’t want a shawl, or a scarf that you wrap around and around, but a scarf that keeps the neck warm without having a bulk of wool around your neck. An elegant scarf!

So I designed a scarf with 16 colors, with 2 ply Shetland wool, using double knitting and a lot of rectangle color blocks.
In this pattern you will need to follow a chart for the color blocks. You will need to be able to double knit, a style of knitting in which you work on both sides of the scarf at the same time. And you need to be patient enough to make around 50.000 stitches to finish one beautiful scarf.

MATERIAL

8 grayish colored 25 gram balls of 2 ply Jumper weight Jamieson & Smith Shetland wool
and 8 reddish colored 25 gram balls of 2 ply Jumper weight Jamieson & Smith Shetland wool
If you want to use less colors, you need about 6 balls of light colored wool and 6 balls of dark colored wool.
US 1½ or 2.5 mm needles, I prefer a long round needle, but you could use straight knitting needles.

GAUGE

24 stitches and 34 rows are 10 by 10 cm, or 4 by 4 inches, in double knit
If your gauge is a bit different, your scarf will be a bit wider/smaller or a bit longer/shorter. You can accept that, or you can try it with a different needle size.
