I work as a urology surgeon, so when my collegue fell pregnant, I just had to make her a stroller toy for the baby with something in our field of medicine. The result was this cute amigurumi kidney, and now all other collegues wish they where expecting again

It was named René because of the latin word for kidney – which is ‘ren’ or the prural ‘renes’.

Note that this pattern explains only how to make the amigurumi, so if you want to make a stroller toy, you can add as many crochet or wooden balls as you like.

Don’t forget to to use #RenéTheKidney when adding pictures to social media so that I can see them!

Yarn: Rainbow Cotton 8/4 (Hobbii) (170m/50h) in colours Light Coral (050), Nude (003), Dark Red (059) and Royal Blue (076). You can use any other fingering weight cotton.

Hook: 2.5 mm

Yardage: 15g (56yds/51m) of Light Coral, 2g (8yds/7m) of Nude and 1g (4yds/4m) of Dark red and Royal Blue respectively. (If you intend to do crochet balls, you’ll need extra yardage of that colour)

Finished size: Height: 10 cm. Width: Body 5.5 cm, with vessels 8.5 cm.

Other tools: Tapestry needle for weaving in ends, stitch marker for row tracking, felt fabric for the cheeks, plastic safety eyes, filling (e.g. polyester or cotton) and short length red or black embroidery thread for the mouth. To make the stroller toy you will also need some elastic braid and a plastic ring.
