Renka is a long, bias-knit scarf with a gentle diagonal flow. Mosaic sections alternate with garter stitch, creating an easy, steady rhythm that is relaxing to knit. The name comes from the Turkish word renk (color), reflecting how the design lets your colors shift and blend over time.

The sample is knit using one full skein of the Main Color (MC), paired with a gradient set of six mini skeins of the Contrast Color (CC).

Renka works especially well with color-changing yarns, but it’s just as suited to using leftovers or building your own palette. For best results, choose colors with good value contrast between MC and CC to highlight the pattern.

The size is easily adjustable, so you can make a smaller scarf or a wider wrap by adding or reducing rows in the garter stitch sections. The sample proportions are based on one full skein and six mini skeins, which creates a balanced size and uses most of the yarn. If you’re not limited to that amount, you can go wider by casting on more stitches and adding as many sections as you like.

Renka is garter stitch–based and worked one color per row, with both written instructions and charts provided.

YARN: Malabrigo Yarns Ultimate Sock (75% SW Merino, 25% Nylon)

• Main Color (MC) - 1 full skein (420 yd / 110g)
• Contrast Colors (CC) - 6 mini skeins (84 yd/20 g)

or any similar fingering-weight yarn with the same yardage and good value contrast.

NEEDLES: US 4 (3.5 mm).

NOTIONS: darning needle, crochet hook (optional), blocking wires (optional)

GAUGE: 23 sts x 48 rows = 4” in garter stitch; Gauge is not crucial for this project, but will affect the yardage and finished size if different from above.

SIZE: is fully adjustable, width - by changing the number of repeats, length - by the number of rows in garter stitch or the number of sections.
