Square kerchiefs or scarves are timeless, versatile accessories used for warmth as well as for stylishly elevating an outfit. Whether worn around the neck, tied as a headband, or styled as a bag charm, they add a touch of color and texture with ease.

Reshma is a handknit take on the classic square kerchief. Featuring a simple garter stitch body framed by a twisted rib border, it’s designed for that cherished skein of luxury yarn every knitter saves for just the right project. The name Reshma means “silk” in several South Asian languages, evoking softness, elegance, and a quiet sense of luxury. It felt like the perfect name for this delicate piece.

PATTERN NOTES
♡ The kerchief begins at one corner with just a few cast-on stitches. Increases are worked along both edges, first establishing the decorative border, then continuing to expand the garter stitch body. Once the desired width is reached, shaping is reversed by decreasing along both sides to return to the opposite corner, completing the square.
♡ Note that the finished item is not a perfect square. The starting and finishing corners have slightly elongated tips which can be styled while wearing around the neck.
♡ The decorative border consists of bud stitch and twisted ribbing.
♡ To work with the amount of yarn you have, you can do more or fewer repeats of INCREASE ROWS and DECREASE ROWS.
