Very fun and innovative hat made in a modular fashion, based on an old hat made from a small square pin loom.

Yarn Choices:
This piece is knit in DK or Light Worsted yarn, using about 100g of yarn, total. Thinner, finer yarn will result in a looser and floppier version. I find that there is a lot of variety in spin and texture of yarns of similar listed weight. The pattern is malleable enough to accommodate some shift, but each item will be individual due to these factors.
I used a ‘hank dyed’ yarn for the COLOR 2 and a more solid, or plain color for COLOR 1.
You certainly could use one color if you prefer, or 2 solids, or lots of scraps.

COLOR 1: Pixie DK, Colorway “Niffler Black” (Tonal Black) (needed about 44g/119 yards); base = 100% SW Merino, 100g/270 yards

Needles:
US 7 (4.5 mm)

GAUGE:
The gauge is checked on your first mitered square. It should measure 5”-5.25” high, along the center seam. The sides of the square are 3.75”-4”. The brimmed hat band has 4 squares folded in half along the center access. This makes the finished hat close to 22” on the inside. This is a nice soft, loose fit for an average head. It is short enough that it does not fall over your eyes. One tester folded her brim under and preferred that fit.
You CAN make the hat larger by increasing the size of your square if you wish. There is a note in the pattern, at the start about how to make it larger or smaller with stitches. You may also change needles to impact your size.

SIZE:
Brimmed Hat = 22.5” around at the bottom and 7” high, this varies depending on where it is folded

Notions:
Removable stitch markers if desired & needle or hook for tucking in ends & sewing.

Hints:
This pattern can be GREAT for using ends or leftovers from other projects.

I prefer not to have to sew things at the end of my knitting, so this hat is made by attaching as you go. If you want to sew yours together at the end, that is certainly an option for you. Please choose the method you like best.

Even if you join as you go, there will be a lot of ends. If you employ the method of weaving them in as you go, it will save a lot of finishing work.
