This hat/toque is part of a series of beginner friendly patterns. The series includes a cowl, fingerless mittens/handwarmers and several hat/toque sizes, are all knitted in the round. The hat pattern includes instructions for four sizes: child, and three adult sizes. Knitted in a squishy 1x1 rib fabric, and long enough to fold the brim up for an extra layer around the ears. There’s a subtle change in gauge, from the brim to the hat’s body, providing structure and a tidy finishing aesthetics at the edge.

SIZE 1 (2, 3, 4)

FINISHED MEASUREMENTS
13 (15, 17, 18)”/ 32.5 (37.5, 42.5, 45) cm, circumference (unstretched). 10.5 (10.75, 12, 12.5)”/ 26.25 (27, 30, 31.25) cm, finished height.

Approx. intended 2 – 5” / 5 – 12.5 cm negative ease. (Knit the size that is approx. 2 – 5” / 5 – 12.5 cm smaller than your head circumference.)

MATERIALS
WORSTED WEIGHT YARN: 1 (1, 1, 2) skeins of Rowan Pure Wool Worsted (100% Superwash wool, 219 yds / 200 m, 100 g / 3.5 oz.), colourway Sky, Navy, and Cardinal.

YARDAGE: 90 (100, 110, 120) g, 189 (219, 230, 263) yds / 180 (200, 220, 240) m. Or equivalent worsted weight Superwash yarn.

SUGGESTED NEEDLES
Hat brim needles: US 3 / 3.25 mm needles, hat brim.
Main needles: US 5 / 3.75 mm needles.
Use the needle size needed to meet the pattern’s gauge and use one needle size smaller for the hat’s brim. Choose your preferred needle type and length for knitting in the round.

GAUGE
28 sts x 27 rnds = 4” x 4” / 10 x 10 cm, unstretched and after blocking, in 1x1 rib, using main needles.
A match in gauge will give a similar resulting item to the photographed sample.

Block by washing following the instructions on the label/ball band of the yarn and gently pin out to dry.

ABBREVIATIONS
BOR – beginning of round
k – knit
K2tog – knit 2 together
p – purl
ssk – slip slip knit. Slip the first stitch on the left needle knit-wise onto the right needle. Slip the next stitch on the left needle knit-wise to the right needle. Place both stitches just slipped back onto the left needle without twisting them. Insert right needle into the back legs of the two stitches and knit them together.

NOTES
The subtle change in needles gently shapes the brim for a narrower circumference and improved fit. You can choose to knit the entire
hat on one needle size and omit the narrower shaping at the brim.
