Rimba
-
This shawl is worked in one piece from bottom up and the crescent shape is made by decreasing border stitches and needle sizes. The lace design uses stitch elements from estonian lace knitting tradition, modified with a bit of textured stitches to enhance the patterns as well as enjoyment of knitting this project.
-
Other than the lace section on the lower half of the shawl, a narrow lace pattern borders the top edge of the shawl (with a small arc at the top centre point). The upper part of the shawl are lines of textured knitting creating an embossed effect on the plain reverse stockinette background. Overall, the design attempts to depict woodland flowers blossoming as light beams through a leafy canopy. Rimba is inspired by the woodlands setting in the novel Anne of Green Gables.
……That bridge led Anne’s dancing feet up over a wooded hill beyond, where perpetual twilight reigned under the straight, thick-growing firs and spruces; the only flowers there were myriads of delicate “June bells”, those shyest and sweetest of woodland blooms, and a few pale, aerial starflowers, like the spirit of last year’s blossoms. Gossamers glimmered like threads of silver among the trees and the fir boughs and tassels seemed to utter friendly speech…… Excerpt from Anne of Green Gables.

Beading is recommended to weigh down the pointed edge as well as beautify the shawl.

The project provides for one size only and the shawl is long enough to be worn with the shawl tip draped just over the wearer’s shoulder. The sample yarn used has capacity to stay firmly on the shoulder without requiring a pin, while yarn that are slippery would likely require a pin to keep the shawl tip draped over the shoulder. Knitters may use yarn and needle size(s) of their own preference and deemed appropriate to obtain desired gauge.
