The name Roots Wrap has a double meaning. The twining cables of the central panel remind me of the gnarled roots of an old tree and give me that warm, cozy feeling that comes from sitting down outside with a good book. On a less literal level, the design of this wrap makes me feel more connected to my family’s roots on the west coast of Ireland, where sailors wore sweaters bearing their family’s distinctive cable knitting pattern. Since visiting Ireland for the first time a couple of years ago, I have been inspired to create cable knitting designs. The Roots Wrap is one of my first, but I suspect it will remain a favorite. I hope it will for you, too.

Dimensions: about 62 x 20”

Level: Intermediate. This wrap uses several different cables, as well as the seed stitch. It is knit flat in a rectangle with no shaping (there are 1 M1p and 1 p2tog in the pattern and that’s it!).

The instructions for this pattern are given as charts and as written rows, so you can choose whichever method you prefer.
