The Winding River Socks are inspired by dense Aran sweaters. As with so much traditional knitting, the central motif was inspired by nature. This design is intended to evoke cozy afternoons with a cup of tea, watching a glacial river wind its way down through a snowy forest. A bold, lazy braid cable runs down the center leg into the instep, with ribbing on the remainder of the leg to ensure a snug fit. The loose nature of the cable and the inclusion of purl stitches prevents the sock from tightening up too much, allowing for such a large statement cable without sacrificing comfort.

Sizes: Sizes 1 (2, 3) to fit foot circumference 6.75-7.25 (7.75-8.25, 8.75-9.25)“/17-18.5 (19.5-21, 22-23.5) cm. Leg measures about 6”/15 cm from cuff to top of foot. Foot length is adjustable; yardage estimates based on a foot length of 8.5 (9, 9.5)”/21.5 (23, 24) cm.

Level: Intermediate. These are a quick knit and not too difficult as socks go, but still involve simple cables and the usual sock skills (working in the round, picking up stitches, decreases, kitchener stitch).

Construction: These socks are worked top-down, with a flap-and-gusset heel and a classic wedge toe. Knitters may use their preferred sock needles; directions are made in reference to markers used for the beginning of the round and the cable panel rather than specific needles. The cable panel is both written and charted.

Yarn: approx. 120 (150, 175) yd lighter bulky (5) or heavy worsted/aran (4) weight yarn. Sample used Knit Picks Wool of the Andes Superwash Bulky in Noble Heather.
