If you’re anything like me, sewing up a garment after knitting isn’t my favourite task in the world, but I really love the shape of the classic set-in sleeve. Ruru Cardigan Light gives the best of both worlds, without the need to sew in sleeves or pick up button bands.

PATTERN INFORMATION
The Ruru Cardigan is a textured v-neck cardigan in sizes from 0-24 months. Designed to keep little ones warm, while being easy to put on and with plenty of ease. Ruru are small owls native to New Zealand. They are adorable but have plenty of attitude, just like this cardigan.

CONSTRUCTION
Knitted from the bottom up to the underarms, the fronts and backs are then separated and worked separately. Armhole decreases and front shaping is worked as you go.

The shoulders can either be worked with kitchener stitch for a seamless cardigan or cast off and sewn together. The sleeve stitches are then picked up around the armhole. Sleeve caps are worked using German short row shaping, then the sleeves are worked in the round down to the cuff. The garter stitch button bands are worked as you go.

The skill level for this pattern is adventurous beginner/intermediate. The techniques used are:

  • kitchener stitch (optional)
  • knitting in the round (either small circumference, magic loop or double pointed needles)
  • picking up stitches
  • German short rows
  • long tail cast on
  • Knit and purl
  • yarn overs
  • tubular cast-off (optional)

Pattern is designed with positive ease to provide for plenty of room for growing bodies and so the cardigan is not too restrictive.

Yarn required:

0-3 months: 200m/218yds (note, the pattern uses almost exactly 2 balls of DK yarn, it’s suggested you have a 3rd ball if you often use more than the suggested meterage)
