Pattern description from Handknit Holidays: “In Swedish tradition, there exists a beloved saint named Santa Lucia. Originally a young Sicilian woman, Lucia was imprisoned at her husband’s bidding - and ultimately killed - for giving her wedding gifts to the poor. Centuries later, in the midst of a famine in Sweden, she miraculously appeared with food and drink, and so she is honored today as one who brings light and warmth and sustenance to those who need it most. When Lucia appears - as she frequently does on the morning of December 13 in Swedish homes - she’s dressed in white, wearing on her head a wreath ablaze with candles. While we can’t endorse wearing lit candles on your head, we do invite you to try this crown, a lively creation that could easily double as an Advent wreath or centerpiece. It’s a funky wreath, knitted with leaves and loops of tweedy greens and golds, attached on an I-cord base that keeps its shape with florist’s wire. It takes a revolutionary spirit to wear this wreath to the office holiday party - but then, that’s Lucia.”
