The idea for the Sardine mittens came about when one of my son’s wanted to try stranded knitting for the first time. After some thinking, he decided that he wanted to knit a pair of mittens with fish on them, because he loves to go fishing.

We spent a lot of time searching for an “easy to knit” pattern with fish, but couldn’t find anything he liked that was easy enough. So we decided to make our own pattern that would be easy to knit, without long floats.
The mitten with the small fish saw the light of the day!

When we had knitted the first mitten, we thougt that it would be nice to make a matching mitten, but with just one big fish. The mitten with the big fish is a little more difficult to knit and you need to tie floats every third to fourth stitch for almost the entire work. If you are a beginner at stranded knitting I recommend that you start with a pair of mittens with the small fish, but otherwise you can mix and match the motifs any way you like!

The mitten comes in two sizes. Size medium = women’s size and size large = men’s size.
If you (or the person you are knitting for) have a bit smaller or larger hands, you can knit a slightly smaller or larger mitten by knitting with a bit tighter or looser gauge. By knitting with 0.5-1 mm smaller needles, you can knit a size small mitten. By knitting with 0.5-1 mm larger needles, you can knit a size XL mitten.

Gauge: 22 stitches x 26 rounds = 10 x 10 cm in colour work with 3,5 mm needles, or the needles you need to get the right gauge. 3mm needles for the cuff.

Sizes:
Medium (women’s size): Circumference about 22,5 cm. Length from thumb gusset to the top about 14 cm. Whole lenght about 27 cm.
Large (men’s size): circumference about 24,5 cm. Length from thumb gusset to the top about 15 cm.
Whole lenght about 29 cm

Needles: 100 cm circular needles to knit in the round with magic loop or dpn:s depending on what you prefer
Yarn: DK, about 100m / 50g.
Yarn suggested: Rauma 3 tråds strikkegarn, Filcolana Peruvian, Järbo Alpe or other wool yarn of the same weight.
For size medium you will need about 70 grams of the main colour and 40 grams of the contrast colour.
For size large you will need about 80 grams of the main colour and 50 grams of the contrast colour.

Vanten Sardin kom till när en av mina söner ville prova att sticka med två färger. Efter lite funderande kom han fram till att han ville sticka en vante med fiskar på, eftersom han älskar att fiska.

Vi började leta efter ett enkelt vant-mönster med fiskar, men hittade inget tillräckligt enkelt. Så vi tog saken i egna händer och började rita ett mönster som skulle vara lätt att sticka, utan långa flotteringar.
Vanten med de små fiskarna hade sett dagens ljus!

När vi stickat upp den fösta vanten så kom vi på att det vore kul att göra en matchande vante, fast med en stor fisk. Den stora fisken är lite mer utamanande att sticka och kräver att man binder flotteringar var tredje-fjärde maska under nästan hela arbetet.
Är du nybörjare på flerfärgsstickning så rekommenderar jag att du börjar med ett par vantar med små fiskar, men du kan så klart blanda mönstren hur du vill!

Vantarna finns i två storlekar. Storlek medium motsvarar damstorlek och storlek large herrstorlek.
Har du (eller den du ska sticka till) lite extra små eller stora händer så kan du sticka en något större eller mindre vante genom att gå ner eller upp i storlek på stickorna. Genom att gå ner 0.5-1 mm på stickorna kan du sticka en vante i storlek small. Genom att gå upp 0,5-1 mm kan du sticka en vante i storlek XL.

Masktäthet: 22 maskor x 26 varv = 10 x 10 cm i tvåfärgsmönster med stickor 3,5 mm, eller de stickor du behöver för att få rätt masktäthet. Stickor 3 mm till mudden.

Medium (damstorlek): Omkrets ca 22,5 cm. Längd från tumvecket till toppen ca 14 cm. Hel längd ca 27 cm.
Large (herrstorlek: Omkrets ca 24,5 cm. Längd från tumvecket till toppen ca 15 cm. Hel längd ca 29 cm.

Stickor: En ca 100 cm lång rundsticka (om du stickar med magic loop) eller strumpstickor, beroende på vad du föredrar.
Garn: Ullgarn i DK-tjocklek, ca 100 m/50 g.
Rekommenderat garn: Rauma 3-tråds strikkegarn, Filcolana Peruvian, Järbo Alpe, eller annat likvärdigt ullgarn.
Garnåtgång storlek medium: Bottenfärg: ca 70 gram. Mönsterfärg: ca 40 gram.
Garnågång storlek large: Bottenfärg ca: 80 gram. Mönsterfärg ca: 50 gram.
