Since this is not a yarn or hook specific pattern you can use what you like most. This is very easily adjusted to fit anyone toddler to adult. The only thing that changes is the number of chains you make. I use about 1 1/2 skeins of loops and Thread Barcelona yarn which is a size 5 bulky and I like a 6.5-8 mm hook sizes for this pattern.
