Scottish Rose Fair Isle Style is a pattern inspired by the Fair Isle knitting tradition in Scotland and England.

It is a tribute to The Scottish Yarn Festival and the celebration of fibres in general and wool in particular.

plus extra resources like ‘visuals’ and links to all videos, and relevant tutorials.

Image Overlay Crochet is a technique based on overlay crochet, where we write stories in yarn, crocheting the background layer and the image layer at the same time, using a special abbreviation and IOC specific techniques.
Once familiar with the techniques and the special abbreviation terminology (’Petranese’), these patterns – though officially classified as intermediate/advanced – include enough support in form of photo and video tutorials for the technique, that even a confident beginner can tackle the patterns.

You should be familiar with basic (US) terminology, confident with counting rounds and stitches and know your stitches from slip stitch to double treble. Tables with the most commonly used abbreviations, punctuation and stitch explanations for our basics, (like sc, hdc, dc, htr, tr, hdtr and dtr) are included in the IOC-1 Basics document.

Gauge is not important for this pattern, however, here are a few statistics:

The amount of yarn you need is depending on your project; I used:

27g of 4ply/fingering weight cotton yarn
25g of 4ply/fingering weight baby Merino yarn
This equates to 75 - 90m of yarn, depending on the brand you use.

The amount of yarn you need also depends on the kind of yarn you choose and your tension. Below are a few statistics of different yarn weights to give you an approximate.

Please be aware that, depending on your tension, you may need a bit more or less yarn. Be sure to err on the plus side.

Using 4ply Cotton yarn with a 3mm hook, my finished square is 18.5cm, 7 ¼” (lightly blocked, without a border).

Using 4ply Baby Merino with a 3mm hook, my finished squares are 17.5cm, just under 7“ (blocked, without a border).

This square is compatible with the Wrapped in Jamie CAL Squares and their borders.

A square border is NOT part of this pattern, but 3 different, compatible square borders are available for free.

SB1 – Jamie, Claire and Frank
SB2 – Scotland
SB3 – Plants and Herbs
