Scrappy Little Caterpillar

Difficulty: Intermediate

This tiny guy was designed to do a lot with a little. Around 12 yards of worsted or 5 yards of size 10 thread is enough to make one of these guys.
They have three pairs of legs in the front and five pairs of prolegs in the back. The tail ends of the yarn are used as antennae.

Materials needed:
7 stitch markers

For the small one: 6 yards of size 10 crochet cotton
size 8 hook
10 cm (4 inches) of wire

For the large one: 11 yards of worsted
size D hook
20 cm (8 inches) of wire

When made from thread, it is 5.7 cm (2 and one quarter inches) long- only slightly larger than the fifth instar of the monarch. Made in worsted weight, the finished piece is around 10.8 cm (4 and one quarter inches) which is still smaller than the Hickory Horned Devil, which can be over five inches long!
No stuffing is needed. The pattern is written to include wire, but the wire is optional.
