The St. Olaf College Sesqui mitten ornament and gift card holders are created using the same patterns, with different size needles. It is a quick knit and a great way to showcase your St. Olaf connection or to show your gratitude to a loved one.

There are two patterns. Both start with a rib that creates 12 pillars, one for each of the presidents that have served the college.

The first pattern is the St. Olaf shield which represents the college’s strength, solidarity, and stability.

The second pattern, O, mimics the palms on the adult sized Sesqui mittens, featuring a golden stitch for each year. With 75 stitches on each side, one to commemorate each of St. Olaf’s 150 years, they form Os to represent the connection between the generations of alumni and current students.

Like the other Sesqui knitting patterns, this follows Norwegian knitting techniques, and uses St. Olaf College colors. Exact sizing is not vital to this pattern, so using scrap yarns with slightly lighter or thicker weight should give great results.

All of the sesqui patterns are designed using Rauma yarn, which is a very popular Norwegian wool. While this pattern uses finull to give you gauge and amounts, it also works well with whatever yarn you have leftover from knitting the other Sesqui patterns.

The mitten uses a Main Color (MC), a Contrast Color (CC).

Among other choices, you can choose between gold, black, grays, and white. Use the St. Olaf College palette guide located here for guidance if you do not use the recommended Rauma yarn.

Depending on size and design, you will need between 6-11 grams of yarn for the mitten, and an additional 2-4 for the optional holder.

Depending on sizing, you can use US 0, US 2 or US 3.
