Shawl Collar Cardigan
The Shawl Collar Cardigan is knitted on a chunky (bulky) knitting machine.
With neat set-in sleeves and a soft shawl collar the Cardi strikes a beautiful balance between polish and comfort: it looks very put together, but is wonderfully light, soft and comfortable. A fairly loose gauge gives it trans-seasonal versatility and it dresses up or down with ease.
It is a simple knit and the combination of a bulky machine and a big gauge means it comes together with satisfying speed. Construction is slightly unusual, but easy, and explained in detail. The pattern includes guiding notes, diagrams, detailed measurements and directions for assembly.
The pattern is written to be accessible to knitters of all levels. It contains guiding notes, diagrams and detailed measurements, as well as a section on working with mohair.
Sizes and adjustments
There are nine sizes, ranging from XS to 5XL. The cardi is meant to be worn with moderate ease (not oversized). Measured flat, the chest ranges from 44,5cm / 35,5” (XS) to 82cm / 66” (5XL). Body measurements are given for both Full Bust and High Bust to enable knitters to choose the best-fitting size; adjustments for fuller busts are explained.
While the pattern is written for a high-hip length, adding length is straightforward; this, too, is explained.
Techniques
- 1x1 ribbing - optional: any of the pieces can be knitted with either a ribbed or a plain edge;
- Cast-on (if edges are knitted plain)
- Binding off behind the gate pegs
- Visible decreases
- Short row shoulder shaping: this occurs on the back only, with no neck shaping, making it an ideal introduction.
Assembly is done by hand or on a linker.

It can be knitted with or without a ribber.
