The ‘Sigh’ shawl was inspired by Sándor Kányádi’s poem of the same name.
The poet longs for a simple life close to nature, one that grants him freedom whilst, at the same time, bestowing that freedom upon others. The well provides water for the traveller, the walnut tree offers shade, the thrush brings delight; and yet the traveller’s existence is as free as the thrush’s song, which drifts away, or like the dew, which heralds the dawn and the dusk, the arrival and the passing. These images convey a longing for a pure, carefree existence and for attention turned towards others: it would be wonderful to create a presence from which others too can draw strength, and which at the same time grants us freedom.
The ‘Sigh’ shawl translates this longing into the language of knitting. Knitted from the bottom up, this triangular lace shawl has a easy pattern. Its clean lines echo the natural simplicity of the poem, allowing the beauty of the yarn and the delicate details to shine through.
Knitted with fingering-weight yarn, the result is a light yet distinctive accessory. The easy lace pattern allows you to focus, whilst knitting, on the rhythm of the stitches, the movements and the subtle changes in the shawl as it takes shape. Just as the imagery in the poem draws attention to the freedom to be found in nature, so too can the process of making the shawl become a time for experiencing inner freedom.
‘Sigh’ is not merely a shawl, but also a longing: how wonderful it would be to be like the well that quenches thirst, the walnut tree that provides shade, or the thrush that simply sings. And how wonderful it would be, sometimes, to come and go like the dew – lightly, freely, at peace with the world.
