“Sikuli,” the Huichol word which means “the power to see and understand things unknown.”

We all dream in our sleep. Some of us remember those dreams, some of us don’t. This shawl was a conceptual idea that came to me in a dream. Like an open window to another world; a motif that contained a circle in a square.

Approximate Finished Dimensions: 75” wingspan x 30” at center depth

Materials
880—yards of heavy worsted weight yarn. We used Noro Silk Garden (110yds/50G ball, 45% Mohair, 45% Silk, 10% Wool): Color: 434; 8 balls

  • US Size 8 (5mm) 32” (81.28 cm) or 40” (101.6 cm) circular needle
  • US Size 8 (5mm) set of 5 double pointed needles.
  • US Size H/8 (5mm) crochet hook (for edging)
  • 1 stitch marker
  • a tapestry needle

Designer Note Choose a yarn that blocks well. See my finishing section on how to block if you are unfamiliar with this term. As you can see in the gauge box below, the heavy worsted weight yarn I used relaxed significantly after I blocked it. Acrylic and blends that have a high synthetic content tend to not block well.
If you choose to work with an acrylic or blend yarn, keep in mind your shawl may not block the same.

Gauge
12 sts, 34 rows = 4” in garter stitch (knit every row) on US Size 8 (5mm) knitting needle after blocking.
One square motif= 5” wide on US Size 8 (5mm) knitting needle after blocking.
Adjust needle size if necessary to obtain the correct gauge.
