Blowing from the deserts of Northern Africa and the Arabian Peninsula, Simoom winds can reach Anatolia, bringing hot, dry, dusty weather. It plays with sand and shapes the dunes into sand waves. This V-shaped, reversible shawl represents “the Simoom wind” and its aesthetical creations; dunes and sand waves.

Materials: 16 Fingering, 3 skeins for each color, shown in Y10 as MC, O50 as CC

Dimensions: 47’’ / 120 cm wing length from center, 13.5’’ / 34.5 cm width

Needle: US 4 / 3.50 mm circular or DPNs; or size needed to obtain gauge

Notions: Tapestry needle, stitch markers x4

Gauge: 15 sts x 42 (21x2) rows in Brioche stitch = 4’’ / 10 cm square, wet blocked

Skill level: Advanced

Techniques: Syncopated 2 color brioche, brioche increases and decreases

Simoom is worked flat with two color syncopated brioche from one edge to other. Dominant colors follow a change in order and form color blocks. These blocks skew to the left, then skew right with more repeats using brioche increases and decreases. This movement gives the shawl an “on-the-bias” and wavy look. The movements of blocks change after the middle of the shawl.
