The Simple Gifts Scarf is an intermediate double-knitting pattern inspired by gift drawings made by Shaker women in the mid-19th century. Written instructions assume that you already know how to double knit colorwork, but cover casting on/off and shaping. The pattern is fully charted.

On size 2 needles, this pattern requires approximately two 50g/273 yard hanks of Cascade 220 fingering in contrasting colors. This will make a bandanna/headscarf sized project. I have had success doing it at various sizes by sizing up my yarn- the larger one you see in the pictures was done on size 4 needles in Berroco Ultra Alpaca Light (DK Weight).

Gauge is not super important, but you may want to work a swatch to ensure that it is tight enough that the colorwork is legible– this depends on your tension, but I have generally found I want to be at the smaller end of the recommended needles for the yarn I’m using, and that it’s helpful to use colors with strong contrast in a sticky wool with good stitch definition.
