The gauge on this is pattern is just for stitches, because it stretches lengthwise and that gauge doesn’t really matter. The stitches are also fairly stretchy, so the gauge is for when the material is at rest.

I was able to make these mittens with exactly one skein of the recommended yarn, so getting more than one is probably a good idea, especially if you want to add stitches to the ends or each row.

Overall, this is kind of a beginner’s pattern, because there are only two stitches involved, and it would be a good practice project for knitting in the round, as the garter stitch is really forgiving.
