Sometimes you want a complicated project and sometimes you don’t. When you are sitting with friends, maybe having a glass of wine, an easy project is exactly what you need.

Sitting with Friends Shawl is mostly easy garter stitch with simple increases and is worked on large needles so the work grows quickly and the shawl has beautiful drape. You only need to concentrate on a few rows for the decorative border and at your next knit night you can show off your beautiful shawl to your crafting friends.

The pattern for both sizes is the same. Choice of yarn weight and needle size determines the sizing.

Gauge is not crucial for this project, and it can be worked at different gauges. Be aware that differences in gauge will affect the size of your finished shawl and your yarn usage. The shawl is worked flat in rows, but a circular needle is required to hold all the stitches. A 60 cm (24 inch) and 100 cm (40 inch) are recommended.

Recommended needles and gauge for size M: 7 mm (no US equivalent) (or size required to meet gauge) circular needles with dk weight yarn at a gauge of 16 st per 10 cm (4 inches) before blocking. Finished dimensions of the sample (after blocking): approx. 48 cm (19 inches) deep and 103 cm (40.5 inches) wingspan.

Recommended yarn for size M: 360 - 400 m (400 - 440 yards) dk weight yarn. The brown sample used Malabrigo Rastita which is a very lightweight dk with 283 m (209 yards) per skein.

Recommended needles and gauge for size L: 8 mm (US 11) circular needles (or size required to obtain gauge) with worsted or aran weight yarn at a gauge of 13 st per 10 cm (4 inches) before blocking. Finished dimensions of the sample (after blocking): 53 cm (21 inches) deep and 125 cm (49 inches) wingspan.

Recommended yarn for size L: 600 - 660 m (660 – 720 yards) worsted or aran weight yarn. The pink sample was made with a worsted weight handspun.

Yarn amounts include a 10% safety margin.
The pattern has been test knitted by a wonderful group of enthusiastic testers and tech edited. I am grateful to them and to Katelyn Daley of Fiber Arts Biz.
