Additional technical information

  • Located in chapter 3 (pages 50-63) of Knitting Without Tears.
  • You will need about five 4oz skeins of knitting worsted for the background and about half as much for the patterns. For the accents, a 2oz skein will be enough, or an odd ball, if you have one.
  • You will need two circular needles, a 16”one and a 24” one, of a size to give you a GAUGE of 5 stitches to 1”-something between size 5 and size 8, depending on how you knit.
  • Includes information on how to carry colors, using two handed method for knitting with both colors at once, direction and diagrams for steeking the arm holes, as well as charts for color work.

Pattern description from Knitting Without Tears:
“This is the very simplest of all sweaters in regard to shape; you can let yourself go with the designs and colors in a quite untrammeled way. The proportions of a ski sweater are governed by the body width, so measure your favorite old sweater, and multiply the inches around by your GAUGE to determine the number of stitches to cast on. Don’t omit to make a swatch.”

From the back of Knitting Without Tears:
“Do you love to knit--and hate to purl? Have you ever started a sweater without enough yarn from the same dye lot to finish it? When you cast on, do you end up with a tail of yarn that’s maddeningly too long or too short? Elizabeth Zimmermann comes to the rescue with clever solutions to frustrating problems and step-by-step instructions for brilliant, timeless designs.”
