Yarn: The yarn used in creating this pattern was my own hand-spun yarn which yielded the gauge listed below. So before creating your cap be sure to knit in stockinette stitch a 4 x 4 inch stitch gauge swatch to obtain the stitches and rows needed to obtain your gauge. This pattern is created for use with any yarn and needle size the artist chooses to use in creating their version of this cap.

Gauge: 16 stitches, 24 rows equals 4 x 4 inches

Cast On: Longtail cast-on used.

Needle size: Size 9 needle with a 16 inch cable.

Stitches Used: knit, purl, k2tog (decrease stitch)

In preparing this pattern I was fortunate enough to have on hand a Border Leicester fleece that was pure white in Nature with an absolutely wonderful softness about the fleece.

When preparing my fleece for use I used a mild dish detergent and fabric softener as part of the cleansing process. The fleece was hand-processed, hand-spun and maybe I will hand-dye it…. giving me an awesome fleece to knit with as I designed this pattern.

Border Leicester is part of the English Longwool Family and many don’t often think to use it in items that are worn close to the skin. If prepared with care the fleece can yield a softness that in fact is comfortable when worn next to the skin.

The chart below is based on your 4 x 4 inch swatch that you created to determine your gauge. My gauge was 4 stitches to the inch x 23 is equal to 92 cast-on stitches. You create your swatch in stockinette stitch because you are knitting in the round. Do not include the double moss stitch when creating your swatch. The chart mentioned is on the original PDF pattern. The cap color is the deeper color displayed. Light reflects differently on the other two pictures.

REMEMBER THAT THIS PATTERN IS GAUGED TO MY 22.5 TO 23 INCH HEAD MEASUREMENT. SO PLUG IN THE NUMBERS THAT WORK FOR YOU.
Happy Knitting!
