I had the best time rummaging in my sock (yarn) drawer, picking out candidates for the Sock Tex beanie.

A wild variegated? Yes! A delicious merino? Double yes!! A long-striping yarn for the slouchy? Sure!

For the contrast-stripes options, how about a variegated main color with harmonious color stripes for a subtle effect? How about a solid main color to better show off highly contrasting stripes? Yes to both!

Sock Tex is the baby brother of my Tex beanie pattern, which uses worsted/aran yarn. It’s crocheted from the top down in half-double crochet and half-double crochet through the third loop for the stripes.

Made in sock or fingering yarn, Sock Tex is a lightweight, wear-everywhere hat. You can also make the stripes in contrasting LOSY – left-over sock yarn -- for a one-of-a-kind creation.

The pattern includes a classic head-hugging beanie and a trendy slouchy hat.

SIZES
Extra Small (Small, Medium, Large, Extra Large)
To fit head circumferences of
20 (21, 22, 23, 24) in/51 (53,56, 58, 61) cm

YARN
Sock or Fingering Weight (#1 Super Fine)

NOTES
The hat is made with spiral construction, so self-striping yarns will work well.
Yarn amounts include a 10% buffer.
Sock yarns that create Fair Isle-like patterns may not work with a crocheted hat because sock yarns are designed to fit around a foot, which is narrower than a head. So you might get half of the pattern on one side of the hat and half the pattern on the other side. Just something to think about. Self-striping yarns are usually good, though they may pool into different halves like self-patterning yarns.
