Learn how to crochet a cute granny square slouchy hat that combines solid granny squares with the classic granny stitch using your favorite worsted weight yarn.

Materials:

  • 120 Yards each of Worsted Weight #4 Yarn - I used Red Heart’s With Love in Iced Aqua and White
  • I9/5.5mm Crochet Hook
  • #18 Tapestry Needle for Weaving in Ends & Sewing Closed
  • Soft Tape Measure (gauge is essential)

Material Notes:
Yardage is estimated based on appearance of skein. I would estimate you could make at least three of these hats with one skein each, if not four.

There are many yarns that would be perfect for slouchy hats! The first question I would start with is will it be for warm weather or cold weather? A cotton blend yarn like Berroco Modern Cotton would be perfect for warmer weather, and a wool blend yarn like my chosen Lion Brand Wool Ease would be better for cooler weather. With the holes in the fabric, especially in the band, I would not use this slouchy hat in cold, windy weather, unless a second, solid layer was attached to the bottom of the band, which would cover your ears and provide warmth.

Time Spent:
Just under five hours. The band will take you the longest.

Size:
Hat will fit average teen/adult.

Gauge (essential):
First square (2 round solid granny square) measures 3” x 3”.

Gauge it very important for hats. If you do not meet gauge, and continue making your hat, the finished size will either be too small or too big so make sure to stop and check it after working the first square. If you’re measuring smaller than the given measurements, go up a crochet hook size, and if you’re measuring larger, go down a crochet hook size. Rework the sample, take gauge again, and see where you are.

Abbreviations (US Terms):

  • DC - Double Crochet
  • SC - Single Crochet
  • sc2tog - Single Crochet Two Stitches Together (to decrease)
  • PLT - Pull Loop Through Joining Method (explained in pattern)
