Sonas, meaning “Happiness” in Gaelic Irish, is an assymmetric triangle shaped shawl. The knitting starts from the upper corner, and with increases at the beginning of every RS row, the shawl gets wider and wider towards the bottom edge.
Sonas features a wide lace panel and a slipped stitch and bobble panel where the bobbles are knit with contrast colour.

SIZE
Approx. 180cm/72” at the top edge, approx. 130cm/51” at the bottom edge and approx. 104cm/41” wide at the bind off edge.

YARN & YARDAGE
Life In The Long Grass Merino Linen Singles (90% superwash merino wool, 10% linen; 366 m /400 yds per 100g skein).

  • 3 skeins, or approx. 870 m / 951 yds of MC
  • 1 mini skein, or approx. 120 m / 131 yds in CC

Sample shawl was knit in Seedhead (MC) and Our (CC).

NEEDLES
3 mm (US 2.5) circular needles, 100cm/40” in length, or size needed to get gauge

GAUGE
Approx. 23 sts & 37 rows = 10 cm/4” in garter stitch/slipped stitch pattern, after blocking.

Gauge is not crucial since this is a shawl, but difference in gauge affects the final size and the amount of yarn needed.
