From the pattern:

For me, the stitch patterns of this shawl evoke the sensual pleasures and inspiring architecture of a spice market in some far-off land. Let this half-pi shawl accompany you on your trips to the market (and everywhere else) for a bit of exotic luxury that will stay put no matter how far your travels take you.

This pattern is presented in written form only for segments with very basic stitch patterns, and in written and charted form for lace sections. This pattern requires standard lace decreases and slipped stitches; all lace patterns contain “rest rows” (rows of all knit/purl). This pattern calls for a picot bind-off, which is explained in the pattern. A video tutorial for the picot bind-off is available at the Apple Tree Knits website, here.
