Spritzkuchen, pronounced spritz-cook’n, is a German Cruller; a deep fried, glazed choux pastry. That’s what this cowl evokes.  It’s light, fluffy and deceptively easy. It looks like Brioche but it’s not.

Why the name Spritzkuchen? I wanted a pastry name like Brioche so that it could be anti-Brioche but still describe the look and feel. My favorite idea was of a cruller, a light and fluffy doughnut. I searched ravelry but there was already another cruller cowl so I googled cruller and found the German word for it. It’s kinda fun.

This pattern is a simple two row repeat; a Cowl for the Intermediate Beginner who wants the look of Brioche without the frustration.

It is knit in the round seamlessly using a two color fisherman’s rib technique to create a reversible, customizable, squishy chameleon of a cowl that is forgiving of mistakes. As written the Cowl measures 10” x 12” flat. It is designed to showcase that special, favorite hand dyed yarn scored at a fiber festival with a high contrasting color yarn - 50g or less each.

Gauge is not important in this pattern and there’s no blocking to deal with when you’re finished.

Cowl in photo was knit with Cascade Yarns Heritage Solids in Snow and Destination Yarn First Class MCN in Lotus Lantern Festival.
