This pattern is for an Afghan square that will be part of the blanket Knitted Up Dulwich Road. Dulwich Road is in south London, and I live locally. The blanket will celebrate the sights and feel of Dulwich Road through the medium of yarn in 49 x 7-inch specially designed knitted squares.

Materials

  • Rowan Felted Tweed, shades Clay (177), Shadow (224) and Carbon (159)
  • Rowan Kidsilk Haze, shade Lustre (686)
  • 1 pair 3.25mm knitting needles
  • 1 cable needle (or 1 small locking stitch holder, see notes in pattern)

Tension 23 stitches & 34 rows = 10 cm

Finished size 18 x 18cm / 7 x 7 inches

The intarsia lines that form the central shape in this block, and the lines that radiate from it, are created with just one stitch of contrasting yarn. Take care when wrapping and tugging the contrast yarn to close the gap for the colour change. If you pull too hard, the stitch will disappear. No bobbins are needed for the contrast yarns. Cut lengths work well.
