Stannington Cardigan
This is a design I’ve had in mind for a few years. On the surface it’s a simple V neck cardigan – but often, it’s the simplest designs that take the longest to perfect. It’s those little details that need time to blossom in the stitches.
The cardigan features one of my favourite stitch patterns, which you might recognise from the Heaton Tank Top, Ravenscar Jumper and Hubberholme Child’s Jumper. It’s a lovely, calming stitch – ideal for beginners looking to take the next step, or experienced knitters after a relaxing, “just one more row” kind of project.
CONSTRUCTION
The back, left and right fronts, two sleeves are knitted flat from the bottom up in separate pieces and joined together. The sleeves are drop. The neck and buttonbands edge are picked up.
TECHNIQUES USED
Cast on, knit, purl, decreasing at neck shaping, increasing on the sleeves, pockets, buttonholes, cast off. Joining seams. Sewing on buttons. Optional but recommended to create the feeling of joy when joining your pieces: mattress stitch and three needle cast off.

GAUGE (tension)
23 stitches and 28 rows to 10cm/4ins square over pattern. I obtained this gauge with 4mm needles.
It is important to obtain the correct gauge so do work a swatch before you start the pattern and change your needle size to achieve the correct gauge if you need to.
FINISHED MEASUREMENTS
I recommend a positive ease of 3-6ins/7-15cm at the chest.
