These mittens were designed and knitted up just in time for Star Trek Day (September 8). The back features the medical Starfleet insignia and the Star Trek logo. Originally designed for a good friend of mine who is both a physician and a longtime Star Trek fan (like myself). This is a free pattern, so feel free to customize it to suit your needs as long as it is not for commercial for‐profit use. Happy knitting and live long and prosper!

Gauge
15 rows x 15 stitches = 2 inches in stranded knitting
These mittens fit my hands (7.5 inches from top of wrist to tip of middle finger, 3.5 inches across knuckles) with some room.

Materials
3.25 mm double pointed needles or circular needles for magic loop
1 ball of main DK/sport weight yarn (~35 g)
1 ball of contrasting DK/sport weight yarn (~35 g)
Waste yarn to hold thumb stitches
Needle to weave in ends

Instructions
Cast on 58 stitches for the cuff in CC. Join in the round. Join MC for corrugated ribbing (or whatever is your preferred ribbing) for 10 rows or 1”.
Add in MC and start main pattern, keeping in mind the increases for the thumb gusset. Decreases start on row 47, ending with 8 stitches (4 on each side). Graft remaining stitches.

For the thumb, I like to do a combination of thumb gusset and afterthought thumb technique. As per pattern, take note of the gusset increases, then place 9 stitches on waste yarn to come back to once the rest of the mitten is completed. Place needles in the 18 stitches on both sides of the waste yarn, and pick up 3 stitches on each side for a total of 24 thumb stitches.

Note: To avoid getting fingers stuck in loops of yarn on the finished mitten, remember to keep floats down to a maximum of 4 stitches of the same color.
