I had been swatching the open and closed star stitch from Barbara Walker’s A Second Treasury of Knitting Patterns with the intention of making some baby items. I really like the combination of texture, open work, and color that is incorporated into this stitch pattern.

I did some research on Ravelry and found very few projects that included working this stitch in the round or with shaping. Thus, the challenge to designing these gloves was working out the following problems:

  1. Converting the stitch pattern to work in the round in such a manner that the pattern did not progress around the hand

  2. Working out an attractive and unobtrusive increase for the thumb gusset

3.Working out where in the pattern to hold stitches and cast on for the thumb and fingers so that the pattern continues undisturbed

After some experimentation and thought, I was able to resolve these issues and was very pleased that the fabric appears to be seamless with no jogs or disturbances at the color changes. It is very possible that the stitch manipulations I invented have been done and documented elsewhere. If so, I was unable to find a reference.
