Is it love that makes us want to bedeck our pets in handmade goods? I have to think so. This is a hat I made for my sweet, stinky boy Willy. Hopefully your pup leaves it on their head long enough for a couple pictures!

This pattern is an intermediate level design. The hat is worked in a somewhat unconventional way because dog’s heads are shaped different from ours. The work is cast on provisionally at the body of the work, skipping the ribbing. Wrap and turns begin immediately and are worked for the duration of the body of the hat. Simple slit ear openings are created at the apex of the hat. The work resumes with wrap and turns through the remainder of the body. After the body is complete, the ribbing is picked up in the round and worked to length. Finally, simple braided ties are added to secure the hat on the dog’s head. Add a pompom if you’re extra, like me. And Willy, apparently.

Sizes: 10” (12”, 14”, 16”) (18”, 20”, 22”, 24”)/25.5 (30.5, 35.5, 40.5) (45.5, 51, 56, 61) cm tied circumference.

Yarn: 55 (65, 75, 85) (95, 105, 120, 135) yards/50 (60, 70, 80) (90, 100, 110, 125) meters of bulky weight yarn (not super bulky).

Needles: Size US 10.5/6.5 mm and US 10/6 mm circular needles with a long (40”/100 cm) cable for magic loop, or size needed to obtain gauge and one size smaller.

Gauge: 3 stitches and 4 rows = 1”/2.5 cm square worked in Stockinette stitch on larger needles.

Notions: 5 st markers (one distinguishable from the others to indicate the beginning of the round), crochet hook, pompom maker (optional), blocking wires and t-pins (optional).

Techniques: Provisional Crochet Cast On, short rows (wrap and turn or German short rows), picking up stitches, knitting in the round, and Combination Bind Off.
