This shawl is designed for my ‘Multicolored projects: use your stash’ class that I am teaching tomorrow at Vogue Knitting Live (if you are taking the class, don’t buy it!).

Lately I’ve been fascinated by texture. I’ve been exploring different stitch patterns that produce different results, always using the same yarn. It’s incredible the things we can do by simply alternating the order in which we use a combination of knit and purl.
But what if instead of making a difference with the stitch pattern, we make a different texture simply by using a strikingly different yarn?
The good thing about this design is that any yarn counts. For my sample I used 4 different yarns in various weights (from laceweight to DK) and in 2 different colors. The only thing you must take into consideration is to pick contrasting colors for Yarns A and B. The rest… is up to your imagination! The more different, the more interesting your shawl will be.

FINISHED MEASUREMENTS
61½ inches (154 cm) from side to side and 28 inches (70 cm) from top to bottom at deepest point (after blocking).

MATERIALS
Yarn: You will need approx. 660 yards (600 m) of yarn, but this amount is variable depending on the weight you use (for example if you decide to use all worsted weight yarns, you might need more yardage). The yarns and yardage used for my sample as shown in the photos are:
YARN A: Pura Sock by Pura Hilados (Fingering weight; 100% Merino; 440 yards/100g): 220 yards. Shown in colorway Black Dog (blue/black).
YARN B: Silk Cloud by Shibui -soft and fuzzy-(Lace weight; 60% mohair/40% silk; 330 yards/25g): 165 yards. Shown in colorway Pollen (mustard yellow).
YARN C: Twig by Shibui -rough and rustic feel- (Fingering weight; 46% Linen/42% silk/12% wool; 190 yards/50g): 130 yards. Shown in colorway Pollen (mustard yellow).
YARN D: Rain by Shibui -plied and silky, heavy- (DK weight; 100% cotton; 135 yards/50g): 105 yards. Shown in colorway Pollen (mustard yellow).
Needles: US 6 (4mm) needles.
Other notions: Tapestry needle, blocking pins or wires.

GAUGE
16 st and 28 rows to 4” (10cm) in stockinette st on US 6 (4 mm) needles after blocking.
Gauge is not crucial for this project, and it will depend on your yarn choices.
