A tam / beret hat with rambling cablework

Supplejack is a tam/beret with cable rambling out from the centre. It is named after the climbing vine (kareao or piritia “twisted rope” in Māori), which is common in the forests where I live. The repeated motif gives balance and symmetry but with an organic and unpredictable quality.

Supplejack can be knitted with yarn recommended for either 3.5mm or 3.75mm (US 4 or 5) needles.

Two sizes are provided for each yarn option. Choose the larger size for larger heads or more flop. Choose the smaller size for smaller heads or for a tighter fit.

Yarn

Use yarn recommended for either:

  • 3.5mm (US 4) needles; or
  • 3.75mm (US 5) needles

Shown in:

  1. Rowan Felted Tweed (50% wool, 25% alpaca, 25% viscose; 145m / 191 yards per 50g) in shades 175 and 159. This yarn drapes well and is ideal if sizing for a floppier fit.
  2. Brooklyn Tweed Loft, 100% Wyoming-grown Targhee-Columbia wool, 275 yards (251 metres) per 50 grams, shade ‘plume’.

Needles

  • Round gauge-size needle (3.5mm or 3.75mm (US 4 or 5)) in 40mm circumference.
  • Four gauge-size double-pointed cable needles.
  • Round 3.25mm (US 3) needle for ribbing in 40mm circumference.

Gauge

3.5mm (US 4) needles - 28 sts and 33 rows to 10cm (4 inches) in stockinette; or
3.75mm (US 5) needles - 22 sts and 31 rows to 10cm (4 inches) in stockinette.

Sizing

Sized for head circumference of approximately 55-58cm (21.5 – 22.5 inches).
Choose the larger size for heads with a larger circumference or to achieve a more flop in the beret. Choose the smaller size for smaller heads or if you want a tighter fit.
