This tutorial demonstrates an easy freeform surface decoration technique. See the photos here. The stitches are easy: chain and single crochet (USA) or double crochet (UK).

The technique can be applied to a plain jacket or cardigan pattern with a close weave, such as those available here in the MMMannequin store:
