How do we make a lacy shawl look exactly the same on both sides?

This pattern shows exactly how we can make it happen.

There are no complicated tricks. In fact, it is so easy that this lovely lacy project makes a great introduction to lace knitting.

Add a soothing rhythm of almost mindless knitting and a variety of ways we can wear this stole, and you have a terrific idea for three balls of any DK yarn in your stash.

FINISHED MEASUREMENTS

Width – 30 cm / 12”

Length – 110 cm / 43.5”

YARN

Any wool, wool blend, cotton, or acrylic yarn that has the equivalent of 150 m / 164 yds in 50 g / 1.7 oz. It is consistent with the DK weight that is marked by the digit “3” on the yarn label.

You will need approximately 450 m / 490 yds of yarn to make this stole.

To make the stole featured in the photos, I used Knitca Delight yarn (100% extra-fine machine-washable merino wool) in Amber colour.

NEEDLES

Straight or circular needles in size 4.5 mm (US size 7).

NOTIONS

Wool needle for weaving in ends.

GAUGE

19 stitches and 26 rows = 4” / 10 cm in lace pattern stitch after blocking.

NOTES

  • The stole is worked back and forth. We cast on stitches for the width and work until the stole is as long as we want it to be. To see how we can easily change the width and the length of this stole, take a look at the Adjustments section at the bottom of this page.
  • When it is time to join another ball of yarn, do it within the side border. Not at the very edge, and not in a section worked in the lace stitch pattern.
  • Underlined techniques are available as separate tutorials. Click the underlined name of the technique to read and watch the tutorial.
