If you have never tried colour-work before this is great pattern to try it for the first time. It doesn’t take too long to knit because it uses a thick yarn, maybe four or five evenings of work. You can even do an Ikea hack if you don’t fancy making the fabric part of the cushion cover - this is all explained in the pattern.

I was inspired to design this cushion whilst browsing through the latest interior design magazines. The modern rustic design is up to date and brings a cosy feel to your home. I saw a really cute black and cream earthenware jug in one magazine with a very similar pattern this, and my idea was born!

This is a knitting and sewing pattern to make your own cushion cover. It has a knitted front cover and a fabric back with a zipper opening so you can fill it with a cushion pad. You can also do an Ikea hack if you don’t want to make the fabric part of the cushion cover - this is all explained in the pattern.

This is not a finished product. You need to buy the yarn and fabric to make your own.

I used The Petite Wool by We Are Knitters to knit the front of the cushion. I used two colours of yarn, black and cream. And an olive green velvet fabric for the rest of the cover.

You will need:

Yarn and materials

100g Aran / worsted weight yarn in colour B (black)
50g Aran / worsted weight yarn in colour C (cream)
Approx. 0.55m x 0.55m iron-on interlining, heavy weight
Approx. 1.1m x 0.55m medium-weight fabric, without much stretch, such as a woven cotton, lighter weight denim, linen or velvet
A zipper measuring 50cm long
A cushion pad measuring 0.5m x 0.5m (50cm x 50cm)

Needles and notions

7mm single-pointed knitting needles
Wool / darning / tapestry needle
Hand sewing needle
Cutting mat, ruler and rotary cutter (or you can use fabric-cutting scissors and a means of cutting
straight edges and right-angles)
Iron and ironing board
Sewing thread in a colour that matches the fabric
Sewing machine, if possible, but don’t worry this can be done by hand

The pattern provides instructions for making a cushion cover that measures 50cm x 50cm. It can be adjusted to fit any size of cushion.

This cushion cover is knitted in two colours of yarn. It is a simple colour-work technique, a great pattern to try if you’ve never attempted colour-work. The rest is made with fabric, and preferably sewn with a sewing machine to get a professional finish, although it can also be done by hand.
