This hat is inspired by binge-watching too many episodes of the British show Time Team. I liked the Roman mosaic floors they found, made with little tiles called tesserae, and some of the hats I saw in the shows. It is much easier to knit than it looks, and is very warm because the stranded knitting makes a double layer of yarn. You can also use up a lot of small scraps of yarn. Wear the diamond over one eye, not over the center of your forehead.

The first photo is of the larger hat made with gray/white central band. The second photo shows the wrong side of the hat made with the denim/white central band, so that you can see how the yarn is carried across the back.

DK or worsted yarn in seven colors: white, gray, black, terracotta, orange, yellow and olive. Or, use any natural colors you like, such as indigo, sienna and burnt sienna, ochre and burnt ochre, umber and burnt umber and various shades of brown, white, gray, or greens such as moss or olive. For the hat with the gray/white central pattern, I used the following amounts in worsted yarn:
Black yarn 8 grams
Gray 17
Mustard 15
Terra cotta 15
White 32
Olive 8
Yellow 8
Altogether it’s less than 100 grams of Drops Karisma yarn.

You need simple knitting skills: how to knit, carry unused yarn across the back of the work, knit stripes, simple decreases.
