’The Bluestocking Shawl’

A ‘first shawl’ commissioned by the owner of my fabulous local yarn shop Bluestocking Wool & Gifts. A simple project for knitters who have never attempted a shawl before and may find complex lace patterns a little scary!

An easy top down shawl first written for lace (2-ply), light fingering (3-ply), fingering (4-ply) or sport weight (5-ply) yarn. Later, the shawl was tested in worsted and aran weight.

The main body section is in stocking stitch with a lace border worked perpendicularly to the body picking up the live stitches along its length.

With the Bluestocking finer yarns the finished size is approximately:

Rowan Fine Art light fingering/3-ply on 4mm needles - 56cm x 127cm (22” x 50”)
Adriafil Sierra Andina Sport/5-ply on 5mm needles - 51cm x 147cm (20” x 58”)
Manos del Uruguay Serena on 4mm needles - 46cm x 122cm (18” x 48”)

Worsted/Aran yarns:

Using 5mm or 5.5mm needles, 61cm x 158cm (24” x 62”)
448-548m (490-600 yards) of yarn

The shawl is aimed at beginners to shawl making with its simple stocking stitch body and easy lace border. The pattern has fully written out instructions and a chart.
