Use any heftier worsted weight or aran weight yarn. I’ve used the following, but any hefty worsted/aran weight will do:
My #1 suggestion: Red Heart Soft with a size F/3.75 mm hook used up 97 grams.
Also very good:
Red Heart With Love with a size F/3.75 mm hook used up 77 grams.
Lion Brand Heartland with a size F/3.75 mm hook used up 97 grams.
Lion Brand Wool-Ease with a size F/3.75 mm hook used up 69 grams.
In all, you will need between 130-170 yards, depending on the yarn you choose.
I used a hook size F/3.75 mm hook, but I also tend to crochet a tad tightly, and I have a smaller head than a lot of other heads and hats. I originally used a G/4.25 mm hook, and the hat was a little loose on my head but may be a good fit for others. Use whatever hook size will give you your preferred gauge, size, and fit.
If you use a standard worsted weight yarn, you may need to go up a hook size to a G/4.25 mm to get the same size hat. Otherwise it will be a little smaller. As an example:
Red Heart Roll With It Melange with a size G/4.25 mm hook used up 58 grams.
This hat is worked in the round beginning at the top.
