NEVER BE SENSIBLE AGAIN!
This pattern lets you customize your Ducket Hat in whatever fancy stripe combination your heart desires! Colour in the Ducket sketch, then use the colour chart to map out your stripes row by row. It’s a fun activity to do with older kids, and the possibilities are endless.

HOW THIS PATTERN WORKS
Each size has its own page with complete written instructions, along with a table you can use to plan and plot out your stripes, if desired. Instructions for the beak, legs, and finishing are included on the final page of the pattern and apply to all sizes. Before you begin, double-check that you’re working from your desired size, listed in the top-right corner of the page!

YARN
Use any light fingering weight/superfine yarn that achieves gauge. 3.5 oz 100 g is enough for baby and kid sizes, 5.3 oz 150 g is enough for adult sizes.

When choosing yarn for this project, look for a light fingering weight yarn with enough structure to hold the shape of the hat. Cotton and linen work especially well. Avoid bamboo and rayon, as they tend to have too much drape for this design.

The original Ducket Hat was crocheted with Hobbii Rainbow Deluxe 8/4, a 100% cotton yarn, in the following colours:

  • Forest (37) — head
  • Cream (03) — neck stripe
  • Chestnut (08) — body (2 balls for adult sizes)
  • Turmeric (45) — beak
  • Bright Orange (29) — feet and legs

Hobbii Rainbow Cotton 8/4 and Friends Cotton 8/4 can be used interchangeably with Rainbow Deluxe 8/4. However, you do not need to use any of these yarns. Any light fingering/superfine yarn that gives you the correct gauge and creates a firm, structured fabric will work for your Ducket Hat.

GAUGE
27 sts × 31 rows = 4” × 4” (10 cm × 10 cm)crocheted in single crochet flat

Gauge is very important for this pattern if you want your hat to fit correctly. There is not a lot of forgiveness in a structured hat!

Adjust your hook size as needed to achieve gauge. A good number of testers needed to size their hooks down, so I strongly suggest purchasing two additional hooks in the next sizes down from 3.25mm.

Because your tension may change when crocheting in the round, this pattern also includes a gauge checkpoint. After completing Round 23, lay your work on a flat surface and gently press the top of the hat flat, leaving the duck head standing upright. Measure straight across the widest part of the flattened circle, from edge to edge without stretching. It should measure approximately 33⁄8” 8.6 cm across.

TOOLS AND MATERIALS

  • size D / 3.25 mm crochet hook (I STRONGLY suggest you also purchase several hook sizes smaller as a good number of people need to size down after swatching!)
  • stitch marker
  • tapestry needle
  • fiberfill stuffing for head
  • 2 x ~3/8” ~.95 cm buttons + matching thread
  • 5 mm black beads, safety eyes, OR black yarn/embroidery floss for embroidered eyes
  • black sewing thread (if using beads for eyes)
  • sewing needle
