The JEE knitting pattern is a tribute to my mum, The JEE, who sadly passed away in 2023. I designed this scarf for her in 2020 as a way of coping while she was undergoing cancer treatment. It brings me so much comfort knowing that she loved and wore her scarf until the very end.

This was not only the first pattern I designed, but also the very start of GoneAwool and Suzanne Ellsmore Designs.
I couldn’t have done any of it without my mum. It was she and my gran who taught me to knit, and my mum truly understood the work and dedication required to bring a knitting pattern to life.

This published version of the pattern has been refined,
but the beautiful textures remain. The four complementary stitch patterns flow wonderfully together. You’ll find the softer, bouncier Double Basket Weave and Rib and Welt contrasted with the almost 3D, more angular textures of the Moss Diamond & Lozenge and Parallelogram. A simple moss stitch border ties it all together. For the best results, use a plump DK yarn with great stitch definition to make the patterns truly pop.

The beauty of this pattern is how easy it is to knit. It’s a great project for both beginners and experienced knitters because the individual stitch patterns are simple and intuitive. If you can knit and purl, you can make this reversible scarf. While it’s not a quick project, it’s definitely a wonderfully relaxing autumnal knit.

The scarf itself is large and versatile. Knit with DK yarn, it’s warm without being heavy, and you can fold it vertically for extra cosiness. It’s perfect for casual wear, or you can style it as an elegant wrap with a brooch for a more formal outfit.

And, in honour of my mum, each October I will be donating 50% of the sales proceeds from this and my other charity patterns to a chosen cancer charity. By knitting this beautiful scarf for yourself or for someone special, you’re also helping to make a difference for those who are living with this disease.

Happy Knitting!
